Trace Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy

Trace is designed as a private, local-first journal. This policy explains what the app stores, what permissions it may request, and when your data leaves your device.

Effective date: March 27, 2026

Overview

Trace is a visual diary app where journal entries gradually reveal a portrait. The mobile app is built to work without an account and without a developer-hosted cloud by default.

In plain language: your portrait image, journal entries, mood tags, streaks, and progress are intended to stay on your device unless you choose to export, share, or save them elsewhere.

Information Processed By The App

Depending on how you use Trace, the app may process the following information:

  • Portrait photos you choose from your photo library.
  • Generated portrait assets derived from those photos.
  • Journal entries, mood tags, entry dates, streaks, and completion progress.
  • Backup files that you choose to export or import.
  • Completed portrait images that you choose to save to Photos.

How Trace Uses This Information

  • To create and render your portrait inside the app.
  • To store and display your journal archive on your device.
  • To export or restore your data when you request a backup.
  • To save a completed portrait to your photo library when you ask the app to do so.

Trace does not use your journal entries or portrait photos for advertising, profile building, or sale to third parties.

Where Data Is Stored

By default, Trace stores your journal data and portrait assets locally on your device using on-device storage. Trace does not require an account and does not upload your entries or portrait images to a developer-controlled server as part of normal app use.

If you export a backup file, share a file, or save a completed portrait image, that copy may then exist in the destination you choose, such as the Files app, Photos app, AirDrop, email, or another share target.

Permissions

  • Photo Library access: used so you can choose a portrait image.
  • Photo Library Add access: used so you can save a completed portrait to your Photos library.
  • Document picker and share sheet access: used when you export or import a backup file.

Sharing

Trace does not automatically share your journal entries, portrait images, or backups with other users, services, or advertisers. Sharing only happens when you explicitly choose to export a file, send it through the system share sheet, or save a completed portrait to Photos.

Retention And Deletion

Your data remains on your device until you delete it, remove the app, replace it by importing another backup, or use in-app actions that reset or overwrite local data.

Files you exported or images you saved outside the app are controlled by the storage location you chose and may need to be deleted there separately.

Third-Party Platforms

While Trace itself is designed to be local-first, app distribution and device platforms such as Apple, TestFlight, Expo, or other operating-system services may process limited technical or diagnostic information under their own terms and privacy policies.

Children

Trace is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information through the app in a way that raises a legal concern, use the developer contact method listed on the App Store page for Trace.
